Traffic was starting to slide down, we had hundreds (literally) of posts that either weren\'t optimized, were no longer useful, or in many cases,\xa0both.\xa0\r\n\r\nIt became really clear that I\'d need to take some time to rethink the long-term goals of the site and devote a significant amount of time to getting back to ground zero with our site structure, technical components, and optimization.\r\n\r\nIn order to help facilitate that I enlisted the help of Steve Latronica to do an in-depth technical audit of the site. Over the last few years we\'d switched domains, moved off WordPress, moved back\xa0on to\xa0Wordpress, and I knew there was going to be a lot of scar tissue from the process that needed to be addressed.\r\n\r\nWe spent the better part of 4 months going through the process, but throughout the whole ordeal, there was\xa0one service\xa0Steve insisted that we pick up: Semrush.\r\n\r\nHe had us set up in his account, but after he finished the audit, we were on our own. We learned very quickly that Semrush was going to be a lifesaver when it came to helping us figure out our strategic direction, identify opportunities, and track every single element\xa0of our website\'s search performance.\r\n\r\nI\'ve now been a Semrush customer for about 9 months, and I honestly believe this is an absolutely invaluable and essential tool for any established blogger, online marketer, or SEO freelancer.\r\n\r\nIn this Semrush review, we\'ll go into detail about what Semrush is, what features it has, who it\'s right for, and a few things we\'ve done to get the most out of it.\r\nWhat is Semrush?\r\nSo after mentioning above how critical Semrush is to my business, you\'re probably wondering what exactly it is.\r\n\r\nGlad you asked.\r\n\r\nSemrush is an all-in-one digital marketing suite of tools, that will help you research and track many of the most important elements of your online business like SEO, paid advertising, and social media.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIt will be different things to different people, but we\'ve used it primarily as our one-stop source for everything we do with SEO.\r\n\r\nThey structure it with by having 5 different toolkits:\r\n\r\n \tSEO Toolkit:\xa0Tools that specifically help you with keyword research, competitive analysis, on page optimization, and link-building opportunities.\r\n \tAdvertising Toolkit:\xa0Tools specifically focused on paid advertising and helping you find keywords that will get you results and traffic (without breaking the bank)\r\n \tSocial Media Toolkit:\xa0This is unique to it\'s competitors, but it helps you schedule, plan, and track all of your social media efforts. Because, let\'s face it, these days SEO and online marketing is a pretty cohesive thing.\r\n \tContent Marketing Toolkit:\xa0These tools help you ensure that not only are you creating the\xa0right\xa0content, but that you\'re doing everything you can to optimize it and give it the best shot at ranking\r\n \tCompetitive Research Toolkit: Everything you need to reverse engineer what your competitors are doing including backlink analysis, domain overviews, traffic analysis, and organic research\r\n\r\nThe primary toolkit we use here at Location Rebel is the SEO Toolkit.\r\n\r\nHere\'s a little bit more of a break down of some of the things it will help you do, as this is most likely what your primary focus is.\r\n\r\n \tKeyword Research: Semrush allows us to easily identify keywords that we think we have a chance for ranking for, that will actually have an impact on our business. More on that later\r\n \tCompetitive Analysis:\xa0We can see exactly what our competitors are ranking for, the metrics of their site/page that will allow us to figure out if we\'ll be able to our rank them.\r\n \tOn-Site Analysis: This is huge. Semrush will analyze every page, and tell us everything\xa0that\'s wrong with it from a technical/optimization standpoint, and show you exactly how to fix it. Not only that, it will make other best practice suggestions for easy wins to improve your page in the eyes of Google\r\n \tPosition Tracking: When you\'re doing an SEO campaign you need to have a way to actually track and see how things are performing. Semrush features really in-depth position tracking that allows us to not only see where we rank and whether that\'s better or worse than last time we checked, but it also allows you to see if listings have ads, featured snippets, video or image results etc.\r\n \tOpportunities: I think this is one of my favorite things about Semrush. It will helpful identify opportunities specifically related to any page on your site. It will recommend keywords that might work well. It will also give you ideas for link building and suggest sites you could benefit from getting a link from in your industry.\r\n\r\nThe list goes on, and we\'ll cover these more in depth later in the post.\r\n\r\nBut having one place we can rely on for all of these features is a total game changer, and it\'s helped us go from a steady decline in traffic over the years from our deferred maintenance to righting the ship and seeing things swing back the other direction.\r\n\r\n\r\nSemrush Competitors: Semrush vs Moz Pro Vs. Ahrefs\r\nHere\'s the deal, SEO used to be easy. Back when I did freelance SEO, you could largely get by with free tools and a cursory knowledge of how search engines worked - and you could get things ranked.\r\n\r\nThese days?\r\n\r\nGoogle is smarter. Site owners are smarter. And there\'s more competition than ever.\r\n\r\nSo if you\'re serious about building a site or doing SEO work for clients, it\'s absolutely essential to have a premium, robust SEO tool like Semrush.\r\n\r\nIn my mind, there are three major companies that offer these all in one services at a price that isn\'t totally astronomical.\r\n\r\nThey are:\r\n\r\n \tSemrush\r\n \tMoz Pro\r\n \tAhrefs\r\n\r\nI have experience with all three of these and think they\'re all good services.\r\n\r\nPart of the reason we\'ve settled with Semrush over the long term is because that\'s what Steve was using when he helped us with our site migration.\r\n\r\nBut, I\'ve made the decision to\xa0stay\xa0with it, because I truly think it\'s the best tool for what we want to do.\r\n\r\nI used Moz Pro for about 4 months previously, and I\'ll say, it\'s probably the most user-friendly of the bunch. It gives you clear charts, with fun colors, and is the most accessible for someone new to the world of SEO.\r\n\r\nMoz Pro is almost entirely an SEO tool, however, and the Semrush feature set is quite a bit more robust when you factor in some of their social and content optimization tools (which we\'ll talk more about later).\r\n\r\nCompared to Moz Pro, while there\'s a little bit more of a learning curve to Semrush, I found the data to be more in depth, they had better recommendations for how to improve our pages, and the features felt more built out to me.\r\n\r\nAhrefs really specializes in backlinks and competitive analysis. If that\'s the primary thing you\'re focused on and you plan to use the service 80% of the time to dig into backlink profiles and competitor data, then I\'d go that route.\r\n\r\nSo while all three are good services for what they do, in my experience Semrush has the right combination of the others to make it much\xa0more feature-packed, and the better fit for most online marketers, bloggers, or e-commerce owners.\r\nWho Should Buy Semrush?\r\n\r\nThe reality is that Semrush is not a tool for total beginners. Semrush is for people who are serious about optimizing and growing their website and are willing to put in the work to do it.\r\n\r\nIf all you care about is tracking a handful of your rankings, then use a tool like Mangools\' SERP Watcher.\r\n\r\nIf you just want Keyword Research, you can use Wordtracker for free to get some basic level insights.\r\n\r\nIf you just want some basic competitive analysis then test out the free trial of SpyFu.\r\n\r\nThose will all work ok if you\'re just starting.\r\n\r\nBut if you have a site, are starting to see a little search traffic and you want to grow it\xa0significantly,\xa0them Semrush is the tool for you.\r\n\r\nHaving all of your data in one place is super valuable, and more importantly, the data you\'re going to get from Semrush will be way\xa0more robust and accurate than what you\'ll find from free tools.\r\n\r\nIt also syncs up with your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools accounts to ensure you\'re getting the most accurate data possible.\r\n\r\nOn top of just being a tool for blog or website owners, Semrush is perfect\xa0for someone who is running or thinking about starting a freelance SEO business or small agency.\r\n\r\nBottom line, all of your competitors will be using a similar tool, so if you\'re going this route, you have no choice but to invest in a premium tool like this.\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/mNiZSRjvips\r\nMy 5 Favorite Semrush Features\r\nWe included a huge list of features above, so it\'s obvious you can do a\xa0lot\xa0with Semrush.\r\n\r\nBut I wanted to drill down on a few of my favorite features, and the things we use here at Location Rebel most often.\r\nDomain Overview\r\n\r\n\r\nThe domain overview feature in SEMrush is a great way to get a birds-eye view of any competitors you have. At a glance, you can easily see a\xa0ton\xa0of information.\r\n\r\nA few of the key things I look at on the Domain Overview page are:\r\n\r\n \tTop organic keywords\r\n \tTraffic trends\r\n \tMain organic competitors\r\n \tBacklinks\r\n \tReferring Domains\r\n\r\nThis allows me to not only get a good sense of how well I\'ll be able to compete with a particular site for a given keyword, but it also gives me link building ideas and places I can go to try and build a relationship in order to get a backlink or forge a mutually beneficial partnership.\r\nSite Audit\r\nThis is one of the very first things I do with any new site, and I tend to run it once every two weeks with sites that I\'m actively working in.\r\n\r\nHere\'s the deal, no matter how good your site is and how well executed the SEO is from a technical standpoint, the site audit tool will find errors, warnings, and things that might make you sweat.\r\n\r\nBut that\'s ok, it\'s just being thorough! As you spend more time with it you begin to learn what is mission critical and what is ok to put off fixing. Semrush also does a really good job of explaining what all of the different elements of the audit are, so you feel confident in your ability to go and fix them.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA few things the audit looks at:\r\n\r\n \tAre there broken links on your site?\r\n \tAre pages resolving properly?\r\n \tAre any pages returning 404 errors?\r\n \tAre there duplicate or missing title tags or missing metadata?\r\n \tContent issues like missing H1 tags, low word count etc.\r\n\r\nThe list goes on. But this gives you an incredibly detailed starting point to optimize both individual pages and the site as a whole.\r\nOn-Page SEO Checker\r\nThis is similar to the Site Audit, but it focuses more heavily on individual pages and how you can optimize them to have the best chance of them ranking well.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFor any individual page, it will do an in-depth content analysis of word counts, keywords, structure and more. It will then allow you to compare that against other rivals ranking in the top 10 for your desired keywords so that you can make edits as necessary.\r\n\r\nIt will also give you specific strategy ideas for how you can win featured snippets, get enhances rankings and a ton more.\r\n\r\nYou can spend hours geeking out about this stuff, and if you have a specific page you\'re really trying to rank, this is\xa0so\xa0valuable.\r\nPosition Tracker\r\nMost important part of SEO? Tracking.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you aren\'t sure what\'s working and what\'s not, then there\'s no way you can continue to test and improve.\r\n\r\nSemrush\'s position tracker is phenomenal. It shows you where you rank for all your most important keywords, how far up or down it\'s done from its previous position, and it also shows you all of the enhanced search rankings for each term. So it will tell you if the result has a review, featured snippet, video etc. and it will also tell you if you\xa0have any of those spots.\r\nSemrush Keyword Magic Tool\r\nThis is a tool I\'ve had a lot of success with when it comes to finding initial keywords to target.\r\n\r\nSemrush is great because it hooks up with Google Webmaster and Google Analytics to take actual data from your site, and show you what you\'re already ranking for.\r\n\r\nBut with the Keyword Magic Tool, you can input a keyword you\'re interested in, and it will give you\xa0thousands\xa0of related keywords and show you the traffic and relative difficulty for ranking.\r\n\r\nThis was super beneficial for my new HDR site, as it allowed me to dig in and get definitive data that shows terms around HDR TVs and video get more traffic, but are harder to rank for than HDR photography related posts.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are literally dozens of other cool features in Semrush that will help you optimize and grow your business, and each time I dig in I\'m discovering more.\r\n\r\nHead over to Semrush and check it out with their free trial. That will definitely give you a better idea of whether or not it\'s right for you.\r\nHere\'s a Walk-Through of My Keyword Research Process\r\nSometimes it helps to see things in action. Here\'s me doing a real-time walkthrough of how I found new keywords for my golf niche site using the tools within Semrush:\r\n\r\n\r\nA Couple Things I Don\'t Like About Semrush\r\nFor all of the things I love about this tool, it definitely isn\'t perfect (none of them are).\r\n\r\nSo this wouldn\'t be a proper Semrush review if I didn\'t discuss a couple things, in particular, that jump out as sticking points for me.\r\nDifficult User Interface (at First)\r\nThere is a\xa0lot\xa0going on in Semrush. When you have as many features and try to solve as many issues as they do, figuring out how to create an easy to navigate user interface can be difficult.\r\n\r\nThe result, in this case, is it\'s taken me hours to get to the point where I feel comfortable finding the information and tools I need when I need them.\r\n\r\nMoz Pro has a leg up in this regard. I found it easier to get around, and I thought their graphs and data were better designed and more beginner friendly.\r\n\r\nThat said, as I get to know the software better, I\'m becoming more confident in my ability to get around, and it isn\'t quite as much of a frustration as it was early on.\r\nEstimated Data\r\nWhile Semrush integrates with Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools to get you as much actual data as possible, one of the pitfalls of any of these services is that they rely a lot\xa0on estimated data.\r\n\r\nIn reports where it shows increase/decreases in traffic or visibility, you learn to take it with a grain of salt. Because on any given day it might show me my traffic is up by 12% - when that is indeed not the case.\r\n\r\nIt\'s great to be able to see numbers and facts, but just keep in mind that you shouldn\'t always take them completely at face value.\r\nSome Frequently Asked Questions About Semrush, Answered\r\nHow Much Does Semrush Cost?\r\nThe basic plan for Semrush costs $119.95/month, and for most people investing in their first SEM tool this is should be plenty.\r\n\r\nIf you\'ve got an agency or are planning to do more client work, then picking up the "Guru" plan at $229.95/month is probably worth it. It allows you to run more data, track more key terms, and create branded reports.\r\nIs the Moz or Semrush Keyword Tool More Accurate?\r\nIn my experience, they\'re about the same. You generally get similar numbers, which also closely match what you\'ll find in the Google Keyword Research tool - so regardless of which service you choose, you\'ll be ok from there.\r\nIs Semrush the best SEO Tool?\r\nIt depends on what you\'re looking for.\r\n\r\nAs I mentioned above, I think Moz Pro is the most beginner-friendly.\r\n\r\nAhrefs is the best for backlink and competitor research.\r\n\r\nSemrush is the best and most robust all-in-one digital marketing and SEO tool, and it\'s the reason why I\'ve personally used it for over 5 years.\r\nIs Semrush Worth it?\r\nSemrush is 100% worth the price. It\'s not cheap with their basic plan coming in at $99/month, but if you have a monetized site, and you actually use\xa0the service I have no doubt you\'d be able to make far more than $1200 from it after using it for a year.\r\nHow to Start With Semrush: 6 Things I\'d Do First\r\nOk, so you\'re ready to give this a shot? Make sure you\'ve signed up for a trial of the service here. Once you\'ve had a few minutes to poke around, get a little overwhelmed, and ask yourself "now what?" then this section is for you!\r\n\r\nThis is how I\'d approach getting started with Semrush and start digging into the features they have to offer.\r\n1) Create a Project for Your Site\r\nFirst thing\'s first, you\'ll want to create a new project for your site. This will allow you to easily track all of the different aspects of your site, marketing, and SEO and quickly refer back when you\'re checking up on your stats and doing your research.\r\n\r\nThis is super easy, all you have to do is go here, and follow the prompts\r\n\r\n\r\n2) Hook up Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools\r\nOnce you\'ve got the basics of your project up and running you should connect Semrush with your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools accounts.\r\n\r\nThis will allow the system to get the most accurate data possible, help you figure out which posts are worth optimizing first, and where the low hanging fruit on your site is.\r\n3) Use the Keyword Magic Tool and Organic Traffic Insights to Create Your Initial List of Keywords to Track\r\nThere are lots of different ways to get keyword information to start tracking on your site.\r\n\r\nBut here\'s how I\'d go about it when you\'re just getting.\r\n\r\nFirst, go to Organic Traffic Insights and do a search for your domain. What that is going to do is show you which pages are getting the most traffic, and allow you to see all of the different keywords that are sending traffic to your site.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFrom there you can sort by volume to really get a sense of your most highly trafficked terms you already rank for, so you can use that as a starting point for your optimization.\r\n\r\nSelect the most relevant ones that you want to continue tracking and hit "send to position tracking"\r\n\r\nNow that you\'ve got some baseline data, take one of those primary broad key terms and go over to the Keyword Magic Tool and enter it in.\r\n\r\nDoing this search will let you see volume and difficulty data for\xa0tons\xa0of other keywords, so it will help you identify some solid ones that might give a lot of potentials, but you aren\'t already ranking for.\r\n4) Do an On Page SEO Audit\r\nIt\'s great to have keywords and know what you want to rank for, but it honestly won\'t mean much if your site is a technical mess.\r\n\r\nWhen we did our overhaul of Location Rebel, I was\xa0shocked by\xa0just how bad things had gotten. Hundreds of errors and broken links, completely unoptimized pages, and images - it was bad.\r\n\r\nBut the Semrush site audit tools were, and have continued to be totally key as we\'ve chipped away at getting it as healthy as possible.\r\n\r\nRun this report, and then prepare to be a little overwhelmed if you have a site that\'s been around for a while and you haven\'t ever done this.\r\n\r\nDon\'t try and fix it all at once either, prioritize the most important aspects (Semrush will help with this) and then go from there.\r\n5) Do Preliminary Competitive Analysis to Become Familiar with the Process\r\nThis is another area where you can spend a\xa0lot\xa0of time. But for right now we just want to get you familiar with the concept of doing competitive research.\r\n\r\nStart by finding three of your primary keywords you identified in the previous step. Assuming you aren\'t ranking #1 for them, go find 3 of the sites that are ranking\xa0above\xa0you.\r\n\r\nFirst, run each of those through the Domain Overview tool, to get a general idea of what you\'re up against. This will help familiarize yourself with some of their metrics, keywords, and backlinks.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNow here is where things get really cool.\r\n\r\nGo to the Keyword Gap Tool and enter those same domains in, along with your own.\r\n\r\nWhat Semrush will do now is show rankings for each of the sites for keywords that all of you rank for.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis is great, because it will also show you traffic data for those key terms.\r\n\r\nI use this to easily identifies opportunities I may be missing out on. If I see that the other three sites all rank in the top 20 for something, and I\'m at 59 - then that shows me with some optimization I may have a chance to boost my ranking there.\r\n\r\nCheck out how to do it more in depth here.\r\n\r\nBy looking at your competitors content you can also get a good idea of what you need to do in order to compete with them. Remember, you don\'t need to reinvent the wheel! Try and do what they\'re doing - but do it\xa0better.\xa0\r\n6) Install the Semrush SEO Writing Assistant for Google Docs\r\nHere at Location Rebel, we do nearly all of our planning and content creation in Google Docs.\r\n\r\nIt makes it incredibly easy to have all of our posts, contents, outlines etc in one place. And more importantly, it makes it easy for our team to collaborate on articles.\r\n\r\nOne of the coolest features of Semrush is their SEO Writing assistant for Google Docs.\r\n\r\nBasically, it\'s an add-on that you can install, that will help you gauge how SEO friendly your post is while you\'re drafting it. I have been using Semrush for a couple of years now, I primarily use it for keyword research, site audit, and rank tracking. Here’s a snap of my active subscription to the Semrush Guru plan! In this post, I’m going to share my verdict on using Semrush over the years. You will find a review of all toolkits, pricing, alternatives, drawbacks, pros & cons, and so on. Semrush Review 2024: A Quick Verdict Semrush is an all-in-one SEO solution that has toolsets to acknowledge both on and off-page SEO aspects. With direct competition from Ahrefs and MOZ, Semrush stands out loud and proves itself worthy in many tests. I will take you through some of them as I review the platform further with real-world examples. A quick verdict: Semrush is a great tool to have if you are serious about your SEO practices. The pricing is economical, and the features are evenly distributed across all plans. That means if you purchase even the most basic plan, the value that you get is justified. Semrush helps you do keyword research, competitor analysis, site auditing, rank tracking, link building, and much more. Its balanced performance is the reason the platform has the trust of more than 10 million users and continues to grow. Semrush Pros & Cons Let me summarize the complete article for you in this section! Semrush Pros: Easy to use interface. Robus SEO toolkit provided. Semrush provides reports in both standard and infographic form, which is really great. Justified pricing structure. Semrush has responsive customer support. 14-day free trial for users to test the tool. 7-day money-back guarantee. Semrush Cons: Beginners might find it overwhelming. Learning curve alert! Semrush does not have an extension. What’s New With Semrush? In the last 1.5 years, Semrush has rolled out 33 major updates. Let us take a look at them here! Semrush now lets users in 28 countries boost their local SEO. They have added a new feature to listing management only for premium locations called Review Analytics. Semrush has two new ChatGPT features in Listing Management Toolkit. Semrush has updated keyword databases for the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, and Brazil to reflect the new search volumes. Semrush now tracks a staggering 38 unique SERP features and identifies more powerful opportunities to boost your brand’s visibility. What is Semrush Used For? Semrush packs around 50 tools in its toolkit, making it a complete solution for online marketing. You can use Semrush to run keyword research, competitor spying, website auditing, PPC campaigns, email marketing campaigns, AI writing, and more! Let’s Review The Semrush Toolkit The Semrush SEO toolkit has four main modules that consist of various SEO tools. Let me take you through all of the modules and important tools in this section. Before we go ahead with a detailed review of the SEO toolkit, check my Semrush free trial video here. Competitive Research Semrush has a total of 5 tools in this module that help you with a complete domain analysis of your competition. Here is the list of tools that you will find under this module: – Domain Overview – Traffic Analytics – Organic Research – Keyword Gap – Backlink Gap Let us see each of these tools in action below! Tip: If you are wondering how accurate Semrush is, then check here for detailed information on its accuracy. Domain Overview With the domain overview module, you will get insights into the strengths and weaknesses of your competitor’s website. All you have to do is put your competitors’s URLs in the search bar, and Semrush will give you a report on the website’s organic search traffic, paid search traffic (if any), and the number of backlinks in the very first fold. Semrush will also show you the distribution of the traffic in different countries, along with the number of keywords the domain is ranking for in each of those countries. We put our site in the search box for this example. So, how accurate is this data? Let us cross-verify it with Google Search Console. The in-house data shows the traffic to be 312k, while Semrush shows 226k. That’s a difference of 86k! Although 86k is a big difference, it’s worth noting that Semrush doesn’t have access to your competitor’s Search Console data. It predicts the traffic with data from third-party sources. Traffic Analytics The traffic analytics tool lets you check the traffic metrics of a domain you enter. It also checks the traffic of a domain against the three competitors you enter. I have entered “Forbes” and “Exploding Topics” for this example. You can refer to the screenshot to check it. Semrush shows the number of unique visitors, page visits, average duration of visits, and bounce rate in the first fold. Let us compare this data with Google Analytics now! Refer to the screenshot below to see the same metrics but from an in-house data source: Here is a table showing the metrics from Semrush and Google Analytics for a URL: Parameter Semrush Result Google Analytics Result Visits 708k 755K New/Unique Users 573.1k 747k Bounce Rate 89.75% 92.69% You can see that Semrush gives pretty close enough data in the visits and bounce rate section, it only takes a hit in the new users section. Organic Search The Organic Search tool helps users understand competitors’ organic traffic. The tool helps you get an extensive list of organic keyword suggestions; it further provides insights into: The current ranking positions and traffic percentage Keyword difficulty score Keyword volume The average CPC (cost-per-click) The SERP features such as — featured snippets, image carousels, reviews, a knowledge panel, etc. Refer to the screenshot below to get an idea of the tool. As you can see in this screenshot, Semrush also gives tags to the keywords — for example, you can see an “I” in blue color in front of a keyword in the above screenshot, which means that the keyword is “informative” in nature. “N” is for navigational, “C” is for commercial, and “T” is for transactional. Semrush Keywords Gap Semrush’s keyword gap module helps you compare organic and paid keywords with up to five domains, subdomains, or even specific URLs. This feature comes in handy when comparing your website rankings and keywords with those of your competitors. You can see in the screenshot below that we had put Under Armour as the root domain and added Adidas, Reebok, and other domains to compare. Semrush gave two things in the upper fold: first, it gave the top keywords and their volume, and second, it gave a responsive infographic with colorful circles. Each circle was assigned to one URL, and they were in different sizes; the size of the circle was dependent on the number of keywords each site had. The bigger the circle, the larger the number of keywords. They also overlapped each other, showing the number of common keywords. Full marks for the presentation, Semrush! Enough about Keywords; let’s get into some backlinks now! Backlinks Gap The backlinks gap tool helps you compare your website’s backlinks against your competitors. These metrics help you uncover all those websites linking to your competitor but not to your website. What’s more, a “Weak” section will also display the domains that main point to your website less frequently than your competitors. Other than that, you also get to see unique and common backlinks between you and your competitor. While Semrush has a separate set of tools, especially for backlink building (which we are going to look at later in the post), these sections provide ample insights into a competitor’s backlink profile. Review of the Semrush Keyword Research Module & Its Accuracy Semrush claims to have 25 Billion keywords in its database currently. That is among the top SEO tools in the market. Semrush has a total of six tools in its keyword research toolkit; we’ll talk about a couple of them in this section. I use this tool quite often for doing keyword research for the DemandSage blog. I’m gonna share my experience using the tool. Keyword Overview Tool The keyword magic tool of Semrush is a good place to start keyword research. The research team at Demandsage is a huge fan of this insightful, heavy tool. All you have to do is enter a keyword in the search box, and Semrush will show you the following things: Search volume of that keyword – both country-wise and global. KD (Keyword Difficulty) Score The CPC and paid promotion score. The keyword interest graph List of variations questions along with the related keyword. Refer to the screenshot below to get a better idea of what I’m saying Keyword research is the backbone of any SEO strategy. It always starts with identifying potential keywords to target once you have decided on the niche. Semrush has a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and understand, even for beginners; if we compa re it with Ahrefs, it has a more complex interface that may take some time to get used to. Now, you might be wondering how accurate the metrics by Semrush are. Take a look at this study, which thoroughly tests this matter. Let me sum up the findings for you real quick. It was found that Semrush had the highest percentage of keyword search volumes, which was closest to the Google Search Console value. Then, it also ran a series of head-to-head comparisons to evaluate how its search volume compared to each platform one-on-one. In all cases, Semrush won these head-to-heads by a large margin. Keyword Magic Tool The keyword magic tool is another tool in Semrush’s keyword analytical arsenal. You might be wondering why you need two tools for the same purpose. Wait, they are quite different. The Keyword Magic Tool is a better option for experienced people. On the other hand, the keyword overview tool is a good place to start if you are a beginner. Here is what you get when you search for a keyword in the keyword magic tool: Phrase Match: It uses the base keyword or phrase in some different orders. Broad Match: It uses any variation of the phrase or base keyword you enter. Questions: A list of keyword questions related to base keywords. Related: This will be a list of general keywords related to the base keyword or the phrase you have entered. You also get the ability to filter the results based on numerous factors such as keyword volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, and more. Try Semrush Semrush Link Building Toolkit In this section, we will review Semrush’s backlinking building tools. Is it any good? Let’s have a look. Backlinks Analytics When you enter a specific URL or a domain in the backlink analytics tool, you will see the following metrics. Referring domains — number of domains linking to the URL. Backlinks count — Number of links the URL has received. Link Type — You can also see if the link is a do follow or a no follow. Authority Score — The domain authority a domain has Backlinks anchor text — text for which domain is getting linked to Backlink Type — Whether the backlink is for a text or an image or a video Refer to the screenshot below, where we have put our own URL to give you an example: I put some filters in place to see the newest backlinks. You can see that Semrush shows a backlink that the URL received just yesterday (at the time of writing this post). If you scroll down further, you will see additional backlink data in the form of infographics. This data representation is both easy to understand and fun to deal with. Who said backlink audits are boring? 😀 Backlinks Audit Tool The Backlinks audit tool helps you get detailed insights into the toxicity score of a site’s backlink profile. The toxicity score is nothing but the number of suspicious domains linked to a website. The Semrush backlink audit tool not only gives metrics but also insights into how you can improve those metrics. Ahrefs does a slightly better job when it comes to backlink analytics. You can read that in our detailed comparison of Semrush vs. Ahrefs (whose link you’ll find in the post above!). I personally would give Semrush an 8/10 for its backlink analytical abilities. Semrush On-Page & Technical SEO Review Semrush’s on-page and tech SEO toolkit is a valuable tool for any website owner or SEO professional. It can help you to identify and fix any technical SEO issues and improve your website’s on-page SEO. Let’s review them quickly! Shall we? Technical SEO Semrush crawls your website and generates a detailed report that includes metrics on crawlability and indexability, meta tags, internal and external linking errors, structured data, JavaScript and CSS errors, and mobile-friendliness. Semrush Site Audit also provides you with a Site Health score, which is an overall indicator of the SEO health of your website. This score is based on the number and seriousness of issues found. Run a Site Audit One of the things that sets Semrush Site Audit apart from other website audit tools is its ease of use. The interface is really easy to understand; mind it, technical SEO can be quite tricky to deal with, but Semrush’s way of displaying the reports is easy to understand. On-Page SEO Checke r Semrush’s On-Page SEO Checker helps you improve the on-page SEO of your website. It analyzes your website and provides you with a detailed report that includes metrics such as keyword usage, meta tags, title tags, headings, images, internal linking, and content readability. Semrush’s closest competitor, Ahrefs, has a great extension that I personally use. What’s more, the interface of Semrush is nested. For beginners it’s difficult to understand the data.
