While we found our Editors\' Choice winner,\xa0<a alt="Moz Pro" href="/cloud-services-1/44483/moz-pro" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Moz Pro</a>, to have an edge over SEMrush in terms of overall feature depth and our other Editors\' Choice,\xa0<a alt="SpyFu" href="/cloud-services-1/44482/spyfu" rel="noopener" target="_blank">SpyFu</a>\xa0to have an easier overall user experience, SEMrush remains a solid overall choice and one any SMB looking for SEO help should consider.<img alt="SEMrush initial dashboard overview sceen shot" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-1.jpg"/><h2>Pricing and Plans</h2>SEMrush\'s starting price point of $119.95 per month is for its Pro plan (an increase from $20 since our previous review), though you can save some money by opting for an annual plan. The Pro plan gives you 10,000 results per report across both SEMrush\'s domain and keyword analytics tools, and up to 3,000 reports or searches per day. SEMrush also prices in terms of "projects," or every piece of SEO research associated with a particular domain. The Pro plan allots five projects, 500 keywords to track, a 100,000 crawled page limit, and up to 50 associated social media profiles along with 5 scheduled PDF reports. To SEMrush\'s credit, most SMBs can probably get by just fine at this price tier making it a very affordable option.The next rung up is the $229.95-per-month Guru plan. At this tier you get 30,000 results per report and 5,000 reports/searches per day. The big jump is in a bump to 50 total projects for the SEO team expanding their research and targeting. The Guru plan also gets you 20 PDF reports with custom branding available as well as historical data access, plus 1,500 tracked keywords, 300,000 crawled pages, and 100 social media profiles. Finally there\'s the $449.95-per-month Business plan. Aside from upping all the quotas substantially, this tier gives you unlimited projects, access to product listing ads, white label PDF reports, multi-user management and access to API.SEMrush also offers custom solutions for businesses with special marketing needs. These include custom keyword databases, custom limits, on-site trainings, and other add-on features upon request.<h2>Keyword Research and User Experience</h2>The SEMrush dashboard is very straightforward. The first thing you see is a snapshot of Domain Analytics, showing a quick breakdown of current keywords and traffic coming from organic and paid sources. Below that are widgets for each facet of your most recent SEO project. So for my PCMag test project, I was presented with boxes for me to set up tools like position tracking, a periodic site audit, backlink auditing, and brand monitoring. While tools like Moz and\xa0<a alt="Ahrefs" href="/cloud-services-1/44481/ahrefs" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Ahrefs</a>\xa0also integrate with social media sources and conduct brand monitoring and mention tracking, SEMrush is the only SEO tool I tested that can also double as a\xa0<a alt="social listening" href="/migrated-6173-onlinecloud-backup-services/48925/the-best-social-listening-and-influencer-identification-tools" rel="noopener" target="_blank">social listening</a>\xa0platform.<img alt="SEMrush keyword overview results screen shot" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-2.jpg"/>The main SEMrush left-hand navigation bar has five main tabs: Domain Analytics, Keyword Analytics, Project, its Lead Generation Tool, and My Reports. This wave of reviews is focused primarily on ad-hoc keyword research, because that\'s what business users will find themselves using most often when identifying the best possible\xa0<a alt="search engine results pages" href="https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/serp" rel="noopener" target="_blank">search engine results pages</a>\xa0(SERP) to target with an rank optimization strategy. As such, I focused my testing largely on SEMrush\'s Keyword Analytics tooling.During testing, I used the same set of five keywords focusing on how SEO metrics, results, and related keyword recommendations differed. The five keywords I used were: "pcmag," "digital marketing," "online shopping," "IT consultant," and "small business accounting." The reason I chose this combination was to simulate real-life business search terms then find related search results and competitive spots ripe for targeting.The search bar atop the SEMrush interface can be configured for any metric, so to search keywords I selected Keyword Overview from the drop-down and ran queries on my five keywords. The keyword overview then populated a variety of tables, charts, and interactive\xa0<a alt="data visualizations" href="/cloud-services-1/48920/the-best-data-visualization-tools-for-2020" rel="noopener" target="_blank">data visualizations</a>. For my "digital marketing" keyword, for instance, SEMrush gave me a breakdown of organic versus paid search with average monthly search volume and a cost-per-click breakdown of how much a paid result would cost in different countries. SEMrush doesn\'t let you filter search results by specific cities, as does\xa0<a alt="KWFinder\xa0" href="/cloud-services-1/44479/kwfindercom" rel="noopener" target="_blank">KWFinder\xa0</a>, but it does include the option to filter by country. One unique filter SEMrush provides is an option to toggle between desktop and mobile search traffic. Despite the fact that mobile is eating up a fast-growing chunk of search traffic, SEMrush is the only tool I tested that broke down traffic that way. The company has expanded its mobile-specific database from US-only in our initial review to 16 new international databases, largely for companies in Europe.<img alt="SEMrush SERP results view" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-3.png"/>SEMrush has also enhanced its traffic and SERP breakdowns since our initial review. In the Positions report, SEMrush populates what specific keywords your competitors lost, so you can find opportunities for your domain, and which keywords are new for them, and track changes with the Position Changes report. To conduct even trickier comparisons, the company created a Domain vs. Domain tool, which allows you to see what keywords your competitor is ranking for and you are not yet.The platform\'s renovated Position Tracking tool includes smart filters that allow you to check which of your target keywords trigger different SERP features, which of those SERP features you\'ve managed to earn, and which of them your rivals occupy. The tool also identifies what pages have the highest probability of ranking in SERP results, with an added bonus for hyper-local SEO targeting: you can set up multi-targeting campaigns that track several locations or devices at once, drilled down by city, within a single project. The tool\'s\xa0<a alt="Trello" href="/productivity/35381/trello" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Trello</a>\xa0integration with also allows you to create a Trello task and delegate work to team members.<img alt="SEMrush organic search ranking research results" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-4.png"/>Below the traffic breakdown is where I found the meat of SEMrush\'s ad-hoc keyword search. SEMrush lists both related keywords and phrase-match keywords, which is a\xa0<a alt="Google AdWords parameter" href="https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2407784?hl=en" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Google AdWords parameter</a>\xa0for close variations on a keyword. Both of these breakdowns are also available from the left-hand nav. These boxes only include search volume and CPC, so it wasn\'t until I clicked "view full report" that I found the difficulty scores I was looking for to identify the related keywords most worth targeting for optimization.For reference, a difficulty score is an all-in-one 1-100 number that factors Page Authority (PA) and Domain Authority (DA) SEO metrics in with other data like keyword search volume, how heavily paid search ads are influencing the results, and how the strong the competition is in each spot on the current search results page. Experts indicate that a good score on which to target here is 50, while anything above 60 is significantly more difficult to topple.<img alt="SEMrush phrase matching" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-5.jpg"/>While "digital marketing" had the highest search volume compared to the related keywords, it had a keyword difficulty score of almost 75. Using SEMrush I was able to identify a phrase match for "digital marketing agency" with lower, but still significant, search volume and a difficulty score of 51. Though when I clicked the SERP icon on the right of the table expecting a detailed table breaking down the PA/DA scores, search volume, and difficulty of each spot on the search results page, SEMrush simply took me to a cached version of the Google results page with no overlaid metrics. SEMrush (like Moz Pro) has a browser toolbar extension that overlays those metrics on an organic search results page, but I would\'ve liked to be able to get those metrics directly in the platform.One key missing piece of SEMrush\'s ad hoc keyword research capabilities is the lack of keyword organization and list management. After finding the related keyword I wanted to target, my only option was to export it as a Microsoft Excel file or CSV, rather than giving me the ability to quickly add "digital marketing agency" to a keyword list or group as you can in KWFinder and Moz Pro. You also can\'t save keyword searches for later use. This roadblock in my keyword investigation process was frustrating for a product that otherwise checks all the keyword research boxes. The company has since added an Export Manager feature, available above any table in its analytics reports, which lets you export keywords word-by-word rather than through batch CSV or Excel. This is an improvement, but still requires you to do keyword management in a separate application rather than built-in functionality within SEMrush.<h2>Projects and Reports</h2>That said, SEMrush does offer quite a bit of built-in reporting and organization functionality, particularly through its Projects feature. Clicking on the Projects tab in the left-hand nav brings you to a dashboard centralizing all the domain data on your site including a current "health score" based on SEMrush crawling data, position tracking information for ranking on particular keywords, and maybe the most useful feature in SEMrush: SEO Ideas.The importance of an SEO tool\'s ability to offer proactive suggestions and optimization recommendations can\'t be overstated. The SEO Ideas feature allowed me to enter all my test keywords and associate them with specific landing pages on my site that I want to optimize in those particular search results. After running an analysis that took a minute or two, SEMrush gave me a number of ideas broken down into different categories: Strategy Ideas (suggested highly ranked pages that have room to grow), Semantic Ideas and Content Ideas (on-page content and keyword suggestions), Backlink Ideas, and Technical SEO Ideas. SEMrush also integrates with both Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and allows you to pull specific landing pages from both of those sources.<img alt="SEMrush SEO optimization and ideation" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-6.jpg"/>SEMrush has also released a new tool in this vein called Keyword Magic, which generates up to three million ideas for keywords based off a seed keyword you\'re targeting. Keywords are automatically divided into groups and subgroups (based on the frequency of other words\' presence inside keywords). The keywords can be sent directly to the Keyword Analyzer, but not sorted into custom lists and campaigns. The Keyword Magic tool you can also filter all keywords that trigger different SERP features, and find all the keywords that contain questions, which helps to target Google\'s Featured Snippets for specific keywords.Some of the suggested Content Ideas I got, for instance, were to use target keywords in the body and h1 tags on the page as well as to enrich the page content with more related keywords. Then on the right of each idea is a little bar showing how difficult the idea would be to implement, and most importantly a short "Why should I do this?" explanation.<img alt="SEMrush page optimization" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-7.png"/>SEMrush has enhanced SEO Ideas since our initial review with even more on-page optimization recommendations. The platform already integrated with Google Search Console, but now you can use filters in SEO Ideas to identify the highest value pages for optimization based on click-through rates (CTR), impressions, and other metrics. After you choose which pages you want to work on, SEMrush will prioritize them for you based on how easy it would be for you to implement all the necessary changes and how much traffic you could possibly gain as a result. Compared to our initial review, where SEMrush provided ideas without context, the updated tool applies these recommendations to your pages and compares them to competitors\' pages. For an SMB user without much SEO experience, this kind of a feature can be invaluable. The SEO Ideas feature in SEMrush was by far the most helpful recommendation tool I tested.Finally, SEMrush includes a drag-and-drop custom PDF report builder. When creating a new report, I was able to easily change formatting and design templates to add columns, headings, or page breaks, and then pull in any domain analytics or keyword analytics metric or results into the layout. Reports are also the area SEMrush has enhanced most since our initial review, rolling out a number of new reports and additional capabilities.<img alt="SEMrush traffic analytics" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-8.png"/>Traffic Analytics reports estimate which channels (search traffic, direct traffic, referral traffic, or social traffic) your competitors are investing in and gaining traffic from, based on clickstream and third-party provider data. The Pages Report identifies competitors\' top-performing pages and does a full subdomain keyword analysis with rankings for specific keywords and URL-by-URL reports.The\xa0SEMrush Site Audit Tool includes a number of reports as well, largely related to backlinks and crawling. The tool now includes an HTTPS Implementation Report to identify errors that might lead to sales losses during a website\xa0migration from HTTP to HTTPS, as well as a mobile crawling report for Google AMP pages. SEMrush also offers advanced crawl settings to choose the number of pages to check, the type of crawler, whether to allow or disallow whole groups of URLs based on specific parameters, and re-crawl scheduling. While not as comprehensive a scan of website health as\xa0<a alt="DeepCrawl" href="/cloud-services-1/45090/deepcrawl" rel="noopener" target="_blank">DeepCrawl</a>, it\'s excellent functionality for a tool where crawling is not the primary directive.On the backlinks front, SEMrush runs backlink profiling reports to identify "toxic links" to remove from your site with its Backlink Audit tool.\xa0Once you set it up for your or your client\'s domain, you\'ll automatically see all the backlinks in the SEMrush database and the tool will link you directly to Google\'s\xa0<a alt="Disavow Tool" href="https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/disavow-links-main?pli=1" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Disavow Tool</a>\xa0to register bad links. In terms of its backlink database size, the company is right behind Ahrefs and\xa0<a alt="Majestic" href="/cloud-services-1/45089/majestic" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Majestic</a>. SEMrush\'s Backlink Analytics reports show you all your lost backlinks, a list of referring domains where you no longer have any backlinks, and backlinks coming from broken pages.The one caveat with all of these reports is that whatever widget you add, you need to run a fresh query rather than choosing from the searches you\'ve already executed and ideally saved, if SEMrush had that feature. Adding keyword list management integrated with its custom reports would greatly improve the platform\'s overall ad-hoc research functionality and bring it on par with Moz Pro and KWFinder.<h2>All the SEO Bells and Whistles</h2>SEMrush is a powerful all-in-one SEO platform. The company has taken off the beta tag for many of its most innovative features, and offers just about everything besides keyword management that a business needs to spearhead its SEO strategy. The lead generation, SEO Ideas, and Keyword Magic features in particular could be a huge boon and help SEMrush better connect SEO directly to sales and marketing as with Editors\' Choice winner Spyfu.Editors\' Choice Moz Pro might sport a better overall SEO optimization tool set, and Spyfu the better user experience and bottom-line business metrics, but SEMrush is a powerful SEO platform in its own right. Beyond its keyword management shortcomings and a price hike since our initial review, the platform remains a solid choice. Considering the unique value in its SEO Ideas recommendations, there\'s a lot to like in SEMrush. It certainly warrants consideration as an SEO optimization tool that can do almost everything for your business.<img alt="SEMrush testing dashboard" src="https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/01jB86usVUQ0i3SEicQ9ogU-10.jpg"/>'}

Traffic was starting to slide down, we had hundreds (literally) of posts that either weren\'t optimized, were no longer useful, or in many cases,\xa0both.\xa0\r\n\r\nIt became really clear that I\'d need to take some time to rethink the long-term goals of the site and devote a significant amount of time to getting back to ground zero with our site structure, technical components, and optimization.\r\n\r\nIn order to help facilitate that I enlisted the help of Steve Latronica to do an in-depth technical audit of the site. Over the last few years we\'d switched domains, moved off WordPress, moved back\xa0on to\xa0Wordpress, and I knew there was going to be a lot of scar tissue from the process that needed to be addressed.\r\n\r\nWe spent the better part of 4 months going through the process, but throughout the whole ordeal, there was\xa0one service\xa0Steve insisted that we pick up: Semrush.\r\n\r\nHe had us set up in his account, but after he finished the audit, we were on our own. We learned very quickly that Semrush was going to be a lifesaver when it came to helping us figure out our strategic direction, identify opportunities, and track every single element\xa0of our website\'s search performance.\r\n\r\nI\'ve now been a Semrush customer for about 9 months, and I honestly believe this is an absolutely invaluable and essential tool for any established blogger, online marketer, or SEO freelancer.\r\n\r\nIn this Semrush review, we\'ll go into detail about what Semrush is, what features it has, who it\'s right for, and a few things we\'ve done to get the most out of it.\r\nWhat is Semrush?\r\nSo after mentioning above how critical Semrush is to my business, you\'re probably wondering what exactly it is.\r\n\r\nGlad you asked.\r\n\r\nSemrush is an all-in-one digital marketing suite of tools, that will help you research and track many of the most important elements of your online business like SEO, paid advertising, and social media.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIt will be different things to different people, but we\'ve used it primarily as our one-stop source for everything we do with SEO.\r\n\r\nThey structure it with by having 5 different toolkits:\r\n\r\n \tSEO Toolkit:\xa0Tools that specifically help you with keyword research, competitive analysis, on page optimization, and link-building opportunities.\r\n \tAdvertising Toolkit:\xa0Tools specifically focused on paid advertising and helping you find keywords that will get you results and traffic (without breaking the bank)\r\n \tSocial Media Toolkit:\xa0This is unique to it\'s competitors, but it helps you schedule, plan, and track all of your social media efforts. Because, let\'s face it, these days SEO and online marketing is a pretty cohesive thing.\r\n \tContent Marketing Toolkit:\xa0These tools help you ensure that not only are you creating the\xa0right\xa0content, but that you\'re doing everything you can to optimize it and give it the best shot at ranking\r\n \tCompetitive Research Toolkit: Everything you need to reverse engineer what your competitors are doing including backlink analysis, domain overviews, traffic analysis, and organic research\r\n\r\nThe primary toolkit we use here at Location Rebel is the SEO Toolkit.\r\n\r\nHere\'s a little bit more of a break down of some of the things it will help you do, as this is most likely what your primary focus is.\r\n\r\n \tKeyword Research: Semrush allows us to easily identify keywords that we think we have a chance for ranking for, that will actually have an impact on our business. More on that later\r\n \tCompetitive Analysis:\xa0We can see exactly what our competitors are ranking for, the metrics of their site/page that will allow us to figure out if we\'ll be able to our rank them.\r\n \tOn-Site Analysis: This is huge. Semrush will analyze every page, and tell us everything\xa0that\'s wrong with it from a technical/optimization standpoint, and show you exactly how to fix it. Not only that, it will make other best practice suggestions for easy wins to improve your page in the eyes of Google\r\n \tPosition Tracking: When you\'re doing an SEO campaign you need to have a way to actually track and see how things are performing. Semrush features really in-depth position tracking that allows us to not only see where we rank and whether that\'s better or worse than last time we checked, but it also allows you to see if listings have ads, featured snippets, video or image results etc.\r\n \tOpportunities: I think this is one of my favorite things about Semrush. It will helpful identify opportunities specifically related to any page on your site. It will recommend keywords that might work well. It will also give you ideas for link building and suggest sites you could benefit from getting a link from in your industry.\r\n\r\nThe list goes on, and we\'ll cover these more in depth later in the post.\r\n\r\nBut having one place we can rely on for all of these features is a total game changer, and it\'s helped us go from a steady decline in traffic over the years from our deferred maintenance to righting the ship and seeing things swing back the other direction.\r\n\r\n\r\nSemrush Competitors: Semrush vs Moz Pro Vs. Ahrefs\r\nHere\'s the deal, SEO used to be easy. Back when I did freelance SEO, you could largely get by with free tools and a cursory knowledge of how search engines worked - and you could get things ranked.\r\n\r\nThese days?\r\n\r\nGoogle is smarter. Site owners are smarter. And there\'s more competition than ever.\r\n\r\nSo if you\'re serious about building a site or doing SEO work for clients, it\'s absolutely essential to have a premium, robust SEO tool like Semrush.\r\n\r\nIn my mind, there are three major companies that offer these all in one services at a price that isn\'t totally astronomical.\r\n\r\nThey are:\r\n\r\n \tSemrush\r\n \tMoz Pro\r\n \tAhrefs\r\n\r\nI have experience with all three of these and think they\'re all good services.\r\n\r\nPart of the reason we\'ve settled with Semrush over the long term is because that\'s what Steve was using when he helped us with our site migration.\r\n\r\nBut, I\'ve made the decision to\xa0stay\xa0with it, because I truly think it\'s the best tool for what we want to do.\r\n\r\nI used Moz Pro for about 4 months previously, and I\'ll say, it\'s probably the most user-friendly of the bunch. It gives you clear charts, with fun colors, and is the most accessible for someone new to the world of SEO.\r\n\r\nMoz Pro is almost entirely an SEO tool, however, and the Semrush feature set is quite a bit more robust when you factor in some of their social and content optimization tools (which we\'ll talk more about later).\r\n\r\nCompared to Moz Pro, while there\'s a little bit more of a learning curve to Semrush, I found the data to be more in depth, they had better recommendations for how to improve our pages, and the features felt more built out to me.\r\n\r\nAhrefs really specializes in backlinks and competitive analysis. If that\'s the primary thing you\'re focused on and you plan to use the service 80% of the time to dig into backlink profiles and competitor data, then I\'d go that route.\r\n\r\nSo while all three are good services for what they do, in my experience Semrush has the right combination of the others to make it much\xa0more feature-packed, and the better fit for most online marketers, bloggers, or e-commerce owners.\r\nWho Should Buy Semrush?\r\n\r\nThe reality is that Semrush is not a tool for total beginners. Semrush is for people who are serious about optimizing and growing their website and are willing to put in the work to do it.\r\n\r\nIf all you care about is tracking a handful of your rankings, then use a tool like Mangools\' SERP Watcher.\r\n\r\nIf you just want Keyword Research, you can use Wordtracker for free to get some basic level insights.\r\n\r\nIf you just want some basic competitive analysis then test out the free trial of SpyFu.\r\n\r\nThose will all work ok if you\'re just starting.\r\n\r\nBut if you have a site, are starting to see a little search traffic and you want to grow it\xa0significantly,\xa0them Semrush is the tool for you.\r\n\r\nHaving all of your data in one place is super valuable, and more importantly, the data you\'re going to get from Semrush will be way\xa0more robust and accurate than what you\'ll find from free tools.\r\n\r\nIt also syncs up with your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools accounts to ensure you\'re getting the most accurate data possible.\r\n\r\nOn top of just being a tool for blog or website owners, Semrush is perfect\xa0for someone who is running or thinking about starting a freelance SEO business or small agency.\r\n\r\nBottom line, all of your competitors will be using a similar tool, so if you\'re going this route, you have no choice but to invest in a premium tool like this.\r\n\r\nhttps://youtu.be/mNiZSRjvips\r\nMy 5 Favorite Semrush Features\r\nWe included a huge list of features above, so it\'s obvious you can do a\xa0lot\xa0with Semrush.\r\n\r\nBut I wanted to drill down on a few of my favorite features, and the things we use here at Location Rebel most often.\r\nDomain Overview\r\n\r\n\r\nThe domain overview feature in SEMrush is a great way to get a birds-eye view of any competitors you have. At a glance, you can easily see a\xa0ton\xa0of information.\r\n\r\nA few of the key things I look at on the Domain Overview page are:\r\n\r\n \tTop organic keywords\r\n \tTraffic trends\r\n \tMain organic competitors\r\n \tBacklinks\r\n \tReferring Domains\r\n\r\nThis allows me to not only get a good sense of how well I\'ll be able to compete with a particular site for a given keyword, but it also gives me link building ideas and places I can go to try and build a relationship in order to get a backlink or forge a mutually beneficial partnership.\r\nSite Audit\r\nThis is one of the very first things I do with any new site, and I tend to run it once every two weeks with sites that I\'m actively working in.\r\n\r\nHere\'s the deal, no matter how good your site is and how well executed the SEO is from a technical standpoint, the site audit tool will find errors, warnings, and things that might make you sweat.\r\n\r\nBut that\'s ok, it\'s just being thorough! As you spend more time with it you begin to learn what is mission critical and what is ok to put off fixing. Semrush also does a really good job of explaining what all of the different elements of the audit are, so you feel confident in your ability to go and fix them.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA few things the audit looks at:\r\n\r\n \tAre there broken links on your site?\r\n \tAre pages resolving properly?\r\n \tAre any pages returning 404 errors?\r\n \tAre there duplicate or missing title tags or missing metadata?\r\n \tContent issues like missing H1 tags, low word count etc.\r\n\r\nThe list goes on. But this gives you an incredibly detailed starting point to optimize both individual pages and the site as a whole.\r\nOn-Page SEO Checker\r\nThis is similar to the Site Audit, but it focuses more heavily on individual pages and how you can optimize them to have the best chance of them ranking well.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFor any individual page, it will do an in-depth content analysis of word counts, keywords, structure and more. It will then allow you to compare that against other rivals ranking in the top 10 for your desired keywords so that you can make edits as necessary.\r\n\r\nIt will also give you specific strategy ideas for how you can win featured snippets, get enhances rankings and a ton more.\r\n\r\nYou can spend hours geeking out about this stuff, and if you have a specific page you\'re really trying to rank, this is\xa0so\xa0valuable.\r\nPosition Tracker\r\nMost important part of SEO? Tracking.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you aren\'t sure what\'s working and what\'s not, then there\'s no way you can continue to test and improve.\r\n\r\nSemrush\'s position tracker is phenomenal. It shows you where you rank for all your most important keywords, how far up or down it\'s done from its previous position, and it also shows you all of the enhanced search rankings for each term. So it will tell you if the result has a review, featured snippet, video etc. and it will also tell you if you\xa0have any of those spots.\r\nSemrush Keyword Magic Tool\r\nThis is a tool I\'ve had a lot of success with when it comes to finding initial keywords to target.\r\n\r\nSemrush is great because it hooks up with Google Webmaster and Google Analytics to take actual data from your site, and show you what you\'re already ranking for.\r\n\r\nBut with the Keyword Magic Tool, you can input a keyword you\'re interested in, and it will give you\xa0thousands\xa0of related keywords and show you the traffic and relative difficulty for ranking.\r\n\r\nThis was super beneficial for my new HDR site, as it allowed me to dig in and get definitive data that shows terms around HDR TVs and video get more traffic, but are harder to rank for than HDR photography related posts.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are literally dozens of other cool features in Semrush that will help you optimize and grow your business, and each time I dig in I\'m discovering more.\r\n\r\nHead over to Semrush and check it out with their free trial. That will definitely give you a better idea of whether or not it\'s right for you.\r\nHere\'s a Walk-Through of My Keyword Research Process\r\nSometimes it helps to see things in action. Here\'s me doing a real-time walkthrough of how I found new keywords for my golf niche site using the tools within Semrush:\r\n\r\n\r\nA Couple Things I Don\'t Like About Semrush\r\nFor all of the things I love about this tool, it definitely isn\'t perfect (none of them are).\r\n\r\nSo this wouldn\'t be a proper Semrush review if I didn\'t discuss a couple things, in particular, that jump out as sticking points for me.\r\nDifficult User Interface (at First)\r\nThere is a\xa0lot\xa0going on in Semrush. When you have as many features and try to solve as many issues as they do, figuring out how to create an easy to navigate user interface can be difficult.\r\n\r\nThe result, in this case, is it\'s taken me hours to get to the point where I feel comfortable finding the information and tools I need when I need them.\r\n\r\nMoz Pro has a leg up in this regard. I found it easier to get around, and I thought their graphs and data were better designed and more beginner friendly.\r\n\r\nThat said, as I get to know the software better, I\'m becoming more confident in my ability to get around, and it isn\'t quite as much of a frustration as it was early on.\r\nEstimated Data\r\nWhile Semrush integrates with Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools to get you as much actual data as possible, one of the pitfalls of any of these services is that they rely a lot\xa0on estimated data.\r\n\r\nIn reports where it shows increase/decreases in traffic or visibility, you learn to take it with a grain of salt. Because on any given day it might show me my traffic is up by 12% - when that is indeed not the case.\r\n\r\nIt\'s great to be able to see numbers and facts, but just keep in mind that you shouldn\'t always take them completely at face value.\r\nSome Frequently Asked Questions About Semrush, Answered\r\nHow Much Does Semrush Cost?\r\nThe basic plan for Semrush costs $119.95/month, and for most people investing in their first SEM tool this is should be plenty.\r\n\r\nIf you\'ve got an agency or are planning to do more client work, then picking up the "Guru" plan at $229.95/month is probably worth it. It allows you to run more data, track more key terms, and create branded reports.\r\nIs the Moz or Semrush Keyword Tool More Accurate?\r\nIn my experience, they\'re about the same. You generally get similar numbers, which also closely match what you\'ll find in the Google Keyword Research tool - so regardless of which service you choose, you\'ll be ok from there.\r\nIs Semrush the best SEO Tool?\r\nIt depends on what you\'re looking for.\r\n\r\nAs I mentioned above, I think Moz Pro is the most beginner-friendly.\r\n\r\nAhrefs is the best for backlink and competitor research.\r\n\r\nSemrush is the best and most robust all-in-one digital marketing and SEO tool, and it\'s the reason why I\'ve personally used it for over 5 years.\r\nIs Semrush Worth it?\r\nSemrush is 100% worth the price. It\'s not cheap with their basic plan coming in at $99/month, but if you have a monetized site, and you actually use\xa0the service I have no doubt you\'d be able to make far more than $1200 from it after using it for a year.\r\nHow to Start With Semrush: 6 Things I\'d Do First\r\nOk, so you\'re ready to give this a shot? Make sure you\'ve signed up for a trial of the service here. Once you\'ve had a few minutes to poke around, get a little overwhelmed, and ask yourself "now what?" then this section is for you!\r\n\r\nThis is how I\'d approach getting started with Semrush and start digging into the features they have to offer.\r\n1) Create a Project for Your Site\r\nFirst thing\'s first, you\'ll want to create a new project for your site. This will allow you to easily track all of the different aspects of your site, marketing, and SEO and quickly refer back when you\'re checking up on your stats and doing your research.\r\n\r\nThis is super easy, all you have to do is go here, and follow the prompts\r\n\r\n\r\n2) Hook up Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools\r\nOnce you\'ve got the basics of your project up and running you should connect Semrush with your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools accounts.\r\n\r\nThis will allow the system to get the most accurate data possible, help you figure out which posts are worth optimizing first, and where the low hanging fruit on your site is.\r\n3) Use the Keyword Magic Tool and Organic Traffic Insights to Create Your Initial List of Keywords to Track\r\nThere are lots of different ways to get keyword information to start tracking on your site.\r\n\r\nBut here\'s how I\'d go about it when you\'re just getting.\r\n\r\nFirst, go to Organic Traffic Insights and do a search for your domain. What that is going to do is show you which pages are getting the most traffic, and allow you to see all of the different keywords that are sending traffic to your site.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFrom there you can sort by volume to really get a sense of your most highly trafficked terms you already rank for, so you can use that as a starting point for your optimization.\r\n\r\nSelect the most relevant ones that you want to continue tracking and hit "send to position tracking"\r\n\r\nNow that you\'ve got some baseline data, take one of those primary broad key terms and go over to the Keyword Magic Tool and enter it in.\r\n\r\nDoing this search will let you see volume and difficulty data for\xa0tons\xa0of other keywords, so it will help you identify some solid ones that might give a lot of potentials, but you aren\'t already ranking for.\r\n4) Do an On Page SEO Audit\r\nIt\'s great to have keywords and know what you want to rank for, but it honestly won\'t mean much if your site is a technical mess.\r\n\r\nWhen we did our overhaul of Location Rebel, I was\xa0shocked by\xa0just how bad things had gotten. Hundreds of errors and broken links, completely unoptimized pages, and images - it was bad.\r\n\r\nBut the Semrush site audit tools were, and have continued to be totally key as we\'ve chipped away at getting it as healthy as possible.\r\n\r\nRun this report, and then prepare to be a little overwhelmed if you have a site that\'s been around for a while and you haven\'t ever done this.\r\n\r\nDon\'t try and fix it all at once either, prioritize the most important aspects (Semrush will help with this) and then go from there.\r\n5) Do Preliminary Competitive Analysis to Become Familiar with the Process\r\nThis is another area where you can spend a\xa0lot\xa0of time. But for right now we just want to get you familiar with the concept of doing competitive research.\r\n\r\nStart by finding three of your primary keywords you identified in the previous step. Assuming you aren\'t ranking #1 for them, go find 3 of the sites that are ranking\xa0above\xa0you.\r\n\r\nFirst, run each of those through the Domain Overview tool, to get a general idea of what you\'re up against. This will help familiarize yourself with some of their metrics, keywords, and backlinks.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNow here is where things get really cool.\r\n\r\nGo to the Keyword Gap Tool and enter those same domains in, along with your own.\r\n\r\nWhat Semrush will do now is show rankings for each of the sites for keywords that all of you rank for.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis is great, because it will also show you traffic data for those key terms.\r\n\r\nI use this to easily identifies opportunities I may be missing out on. If I see that the other three sites all rank in the top 20 for something, and I\'m at 59 - then that shows me with some optimization I may have a chance to boost my ranking there.\r\n\r\nCheck out how to do it more in depth here.\r\n\r\nBy looking at your competitors content you can also get a good idea of what you need to do in order to compete with them. Remember, you don\'t need to reinvent the wheel! Try and do what they\'re doing - but do it\xa0better.\xa0\r\n6) Install the Semrush SEO Writing Assistant for Google Docs\r\nHere at Location Rebel, we do nearly all of our planning and content creation in Google Docs.\r\n\r\nIt makes it incredibly easy to have all of our posts, contents, outlines etc in one place. And more importantly, it makes it easy for our team to collaborate on articles.\r\n\r\nOne of the coolest features of Semrush is their SEO Writing assistant for Google Docs.\r\n\r\nBasically, it\'s an add-on that you can install, that will help you gauge how SEO friendly your post is while you\'re drafting it. When we\'re editing in WordPress we rely on the Yoast SEO plugin to tell us how we\'re doing, but being able to get guidance directly in Google Docs as we\'re in the creation process has bee super valuable.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTo set this up just log in and go to Content Marketing Toolkit --> SEO Writing Assistant and then follow the prompts.\r\nFinal Thoughts on Semrush\r\nOverall I\'ve been incredibly happy as a customer of Semrush. While the entry-level price is higher than some other tools, you get a huge amount of functionality for the money. And usage limits are extremely generous (far better value than Ahrefs and Moz, for example.) In this Semrush review, we’ll be taking a closer look at each of the platform’s core features, discussing its pros and cons, and answering all your other burning questions. What is Semrush? Semrush is a comprehensive all-in-one digital marketing platform comprising over 50 different SEO tools. Combined, these tools cover the complete spectrum of online marketing channels. You can use them to create, measure, and manage your SEO, content marketing, keyword research, PPC, and social media marketing campaigns. For example, you can use Semrush to: Find keywords that your target audience is searching for Optimize your website content Conduct comprehensive SEO audits of your site Find new link-building opportunities Analyze your competitors and spy on their website traffic Gather insights to inform your paid ad campaigns Schedule social media posts and track your SMM performance Plus a whole lot more! When you first sign up, you’ll be brought to the main Projects dashboard, which gives you an overview of your current projects and competitors. At the top of the report, you’ll see the domain’s Authority Score, which is calculated based on its backlink profile. If you’re analyzing your own domain, it lets you know how you’re performing. Aside from that, there are also plenty of other useful metrics displayed in the Domain Overview report, including: Total monthly search traffic stats Backlinks and referring domains SERP features data Top organic keywords Main organic competitors And much more You can break the data down by country if you’re interested in analyzing local SEO performance. For example, if you only want to see what keywords the domain is ranking for in the UK, just choose the UK from the selection tool at the top. Another thing we like about Semrush’s Domain Overview is the Keywords by Intent section of the report. It tells you what percentage of the domain’s ranking keywords are informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional. This comes in useful when evaluating your SEO strategy. For example, if you’re running a blog, you’d expect most of your ranked keywords to be informational. But if you’re running an ecommerce store, you’d hope they’d be transactional or commercial. The Competitive Positioning Map is another neat feature. It shows you who your main competitors are in terms of search visibility by visualizing them on a bubble graph. At the bottom of the report, you’ll find a ton of backlink data. First, you’ll see a brief list of some of the domain’s most important referring pages (a complete list of all referring domains is available in the Backlink Analytics tool, which we’ll look at later). Next to that, you’ll see an overview of the domain’s Follow to Nofollow link ratio, which can help you to evaluate the strength of its backlink profile. A healthy backlink profile will include a good mix of Follow and Nofollow links (NoFollow links are actually now considered a “hint” for search rankings so they are somewhat beneficial). You’ll also be able to see a breakdown of the different backlink types (text, image, form, etc.), top anchors, and more. Traffic Analytics From the left sidebar, navigate to SEO > Traffic Analytics to open up a detailed traffic report for any domain. This is Semrush’s answer to Similarweb. While the Domain Overview tool we just looked at only shows you total monthly search traffic estimates, the Traffic Analytics section provides a much deeper level of insight. You can use it to find out things like: How many visits the analyzed domain gets per month on different devices (desktop vs mobile) The average number of pages each visitor views per session The average bounce rate (i.e. the percentage of visitors who click away after only viewing one page) The average visit duration What the analyzed domain’s top-performing pages are, and their traffic share Where the analyzed domain’s website traffic is coming from (e.g. search, referrals, social, paid ads, or direct visits) Where website visitors go after they leave the site The geological distribution of the analyzed domain’s traffic Depending on the plan you sign up for, you can also access historical traffic data going as far back as January 2017. The Traffic Analytics tool offers estimations only. So, it won’t be 100% accurate. I tested it out by comparing estimates for my own website to real traffic data from Google Analytics, and it didn’t quite match up but it was fairly close. It’s a reasonably accurate estimation that can give you a rough idea of traffic numbers, but it’s definitely not an exact science. And you definitely shouldn’t base any critical decisions such as website purchases on this data. Based on the other SEO software tools I’ve tested, it’s one of the most accurate out there. Regardless of accuracy, I’d recommend that you avoid making any critical decisions based on this data since it’s only an estimation. But, it’s incredibly useful for prioritizing campaigns. Organic Research In the Organic Research report, you’ll find a more detailed breakdown of organic search ranking data. You can open it up by clicking it underneath the Competitive Research section of the left hand sidebar. Then, search for any domain to see which keywords they get their traffic from, what SERP feature they rank for, and more. The Organic Keywords Trends graph at the top shows you the number of keywords the site has ranked for in any given position (e.g. in positions 1-3, 4-10, etc.) over time. It’s a good way to get an idea of your performance and whether or not your organic visibility has increased or decreased over the past few months, years, etc. Click the Positions tab to analyze a complete list of the domain’s organic keyword rankings. You can sort the results by traffic to see which ranked keywords are driving the most clicks, or by any other metric. In the Position Changes section of the report, you’ll see a complete list of the analyzed domain’s organic ranking position changes. For example, if they’ve suddenly jumped up from position three to position one for a given keyword, you’ll be able to see that here. At the top of this section, you’ll also be able to see an overview of the analyzed domain’s position changes. It shows you the total number of new, improved, declined, and lost positions in the target time period, so you can see whether you’ve made progress or lost ground in that time. In the Competitors tab, you’ll see a larger version of the Competitive Positioning Map we saw in the Domain Overview. And below that, a complete list of all the analyzed domain’s organic competitors. There are some useful metrics listed alongside each competitor, including their competition level, common keywords (the number of keywords they rank for that the analyzed domain also ranks for), SE keywords (the total number of keywords they rank for in positions 1-100), traffic, traffic cost, etc. You can sort the Organic Competitors list by any metric. From the Pages section, you’ll see a complete list of the domain’s ranked website pages. Each page is listed alongside its estimated traffic, ranked keywords data, and other metrics. Keyword Research The Keyword Research tool is a collection of five tools that you can use to discover new keyword ideas, analyze their core parameters, organize them into lists, and set up keyword and position tracking. Let’s start with the Keyword Overview tool. You can use this to validate your keywords by analyzing the most important metrics. Just type in a keyword (or up to 100 different keywords for a bulk analysis) into the tool and hit Search to get started. In the report, you’ll find tons of useful metrics. Volume tells you the average number of monthly searches the analyzed keyword received over a specified period. You can view both the global search volume and the search volume in any country. The Intent section tells you what users who search for the keyword are looking for, which helps you validate ideas and plan your content. The Trend graph shows you how search volume has changed over time so you can identify potential long-term trends; the SF section tells you what SERP features appear for the target keyword, and the Results metric tells you how many pages are already ranking for the search term. Arguably the most important metric in this section, though, is the Keyword Difficulty score. This is a proprietary Semrush metric that tells you how hard a keyword is to rank for. If you want to compete for keywords rated ‘hard’ or ‘very hard’, you’ll need to spend a lot of time on on-page SEO and link building. Scroll down to the SERP Analysis section, and you’ll see a list of all the pages that are ranking for the analyzed keyword in order of their ranking position and alongside key metrics like Authority Score, backlinks, and referring domains. This makes it easy to assess the competition without having to open up a new tab and type it into Google yourself. To generate new keyword ideas, you can use the Keyword Magic Tool. All you have to do is enter a seed keyword and hit Search, and it’ll pull up tons of similar and related keywords, alongside all the most important metrics: Volume, Trend, Keyword Difficulty, Intent, etc. You can filter the results by any metric to make it easier to sort through your options. Plus, there are a bunch of other useful filtering options too. For example, you can click Questions at the top to filter the results to only show question-related keywords (those that start with words like ‘how’, ‘what’, ‘where’, etc.) You can also filter the results to only show broad match, phrase match, exact match, or related keywords. Plus, set words to exclude, filter by language, and more. If you see a keyword that you want to come back to or target in your campaigns, you can save it to your keyword list in one click. You can view your keyword lists at any time through the Keyword Manager, which you can also access from the sidebar. If I had to nitpick, my one gripe would be that all Semrush data is for Google. It doesn’t give you metrics for other popular search engines, like Bing, DuckDuckGo, or YouTube (whereas competitors like Ahrefs do). This isn’t a huge deal, as the vast majority of searches are made on Google anyway, but it’d be nice to have the option. One final tool to mention in this section is Position Tracking. This is Semrush’s built-in rank tracker and lets you keep track of how your website is ranking for a given keyword over time. You can set up email notifications to be notified whenever an important position change occurs. While with some all-in-one SEO tools, rank tracking tends to be a feature that’s included but often short on features. But with Semrush, this isn’t the case. It’s one of the best rank tracking tools that I’ve tested. Backlink Analytics Under the Link Building tab, you’ll find a handful of tools to help you analyze backlinks, find new link-building opportunities, and manage your outreach campaigns. The Backlink Analytics tool lets you evaluate and compare the link profiles of any domain in a few clicks. Just type in the URL and hit Analyze to get started. In the Backlink Analytics report, you’ll be able to: See the analyzed domain’s Authority Score View its total backlinks and referring domains over time See its Overall Toxicity Score (an indication of the quality of links pointing to it) Analyze its link profile to see what kind of sites are linking to it and evaluate link attributes On the Overview page, you’ll find a bunch of useful graphs and visualizations. The Categories of Referring Domains chart shows you what the main industries/niches that link to the analyzed domain are. Next to that, the Top Anchors word cloud shows you the text that most links pointing to the domain appear on. The larger the text appears, the more common the anchor. Other charts show you things like TLD distribution, new and lost backlinks, and more. You can use the tabs at the top of the page to open up a complete list of backlinks, anchors, referring domains, etc., and sort through the results with rich filtering options. If you want a complete picture of your backlink profile without leaving your Semrush dashboard, you can integrate it with Google Search Console. Link Building Tool You can use the Link Building Tool to prospect for new backlink opportunities, validate link prospects, and conduct outreach campaigns. Semrush integrates with your mailbox so you can contact domain owners you’d like to acquire a backlink from without ever leaving the platform. And customizable email templates make it easy to send outreach emails at scale. Once you’ve started reaching out, you can track your results with email open and reply rates, and send automatic follow-ups to boost your chances of earning links. Site Audit Site Audit is one of Semrush’s most useful tools. You can use it to crawl through all the pages on your site to uncover issues that might be negatively impacting your ability to rank, such as: Duplicate content Crawl errors Slow loading times SSL issues Keyword stuffing Missing headers And much more Once the audit has finished, it’ll provide you with a report outlining all the issues that need to be fixed. Issues are categorized as ‘errors’, ‘warnings’, or ‘notices’ based on how important they are. This can help you to prioritize your SEO efforts. Semrush also gives you a detailed explanation of each issue and tells you exactly how to fix them The Site Health bar grades your site with a percentage, so you can keep track of improvements over time. Note: The Site Audit feature is extremely good. Which is why we included it as one of our top recommendations in our roundup of SEO site audit tools. On-page SEO Checker The On-page SEO Checker is a more focused auditing tool that provides you with ideas on how you could improve the ranking potential of each individual page on your site. To use it, click On Page SEO Checker in the left-hand sidebar, underneath the On Page Tech & SEO heading. Then, click Create project to set up a new project. You’ll need to import the pages you’d like to optimize and their target keywords before you can run the report. Once it’s done, open up the results and you’ll be brought to the Overview page. Here, you’ll see an overview of the total number of ‘ideas’ Semrush has found, broken down into different categories, namely: Strategy Ideas Backlink Ideas Technical SEO Ideas User Experience Ideas SERP Features Ideas Semantic Ideas Content Ideas Ideas are basically suggestions for things you can do to further optimize your pages. Semrush generates these ideas by conducting an in-depth analysis and comparing your pages to the top 10 organic results for the target keyword on Google. For example, Semrush might suggest adding certain related keywords to one of your pages if it finds that most of the pages already ranking for its target keyword also include them. Click the Optimization Ideas tab from the top and choose a page to open up the full list of suggestions. Next to each suggestion, there’s a Why should I do this? dropdown button, which you can click to find out why it could help you rank. For example, if Semrush suggests that you earn links from more sources, it’ll also tell you that this is because backlinks are one of the most important ranking factors, and the more you have, the higher chance you’ll have of ranking. Under the Top 10 Benchmarking tab, you’ll also be able to see how each of your website pages compared to the other pages ranking on Google for the target keyword in areas like readability, content length, referring domains, etc. Other Semrush features you should know about We’ve hardly even scratched the surface of what you can do on Semrush so far. There are tons of other features and add-ons worth mentioning, but we don’t have time to cover them all in detail here. So instead, here’s a brief overview of some of the extra features we think you should know about: Content Audit. Save time manually auditing your content. Connect Semrush to GA and GSC to pull in data for your content. Then, Semrush will identify underperforming content. You can then audit your content with GA + GSC data displayed automatically. Listing Management. Automatically distribute your local business details to over 70 online directories to boost your local visibility and online reputation. Backlink Audit Tool. Identify and remove toxic backlinks (useful if you’ve been hit with a manual penalty) Keyword Gap & Backlink Gap. Compare up to 5 domains side-by-side to discover new opportunities. Advertising toolkit. Track your ad positions, discover and analyze PPC keywords, research competitors’ PLAs, and more. Social Media toolkit. Track your SMM performance with analytics, run ads, and schedule social media posts in advance. Content Marketing toolkit. Research and discover topics for your content marketing campaigns, monitor your brand, create SEO-friendly writing briefs for any target keyword automatically, and analyze the content you write in real-time with personalized SEO recommendations. Try Semrush Free Semrush pros and cons Now we’ve looked at the features, let’s discuss some of Semrush’s biggest pros and cons. Pros Huge databases. The data you get access to with Semrush is second to none. It has the largest keyword database on the market—there are over 21.1 billion keywords in the Keyword Magic tool. And it has the fastest backlink crawler on the market, and the largest backlink database, with over 43 trillion links. Broad feature set. Semrush offers more tools in one place than any other platform we’ve come across. Its comprehensive toolkit includes over 50 tools covering pretty much every online marketing channel, including SEO, social media, and PPC. Extensive backlink and keyword metrics. Semrush provides you with all the metrics you could possibly need to evaluate keyword and backlink opportunities. The Keyword Intent metric is particularly useful as it’s something most other tools don’t show you. Powerful link-building features. There’s a lot to like about Semrush, but its link-building features deserve particular praise. It doesn’t just help you to identify new link-building opportunities, but also provides you with the tools you need to manage and track your entire outreach campaigns. Great value for money. You might look at the pricing of Semrush and think it’s expensive. But for what you get for the money? It isn’t. You get a huge number of SEO and content marketing tools. If you bought tools to cover most of these features, you’d end up paying a lot more. Generous usage allowances. This is another factor to consider when judging how expensive a tool really is. Semrush allows 3,000 daily reports on it’s lowest plan for domain/backlink analytics and that increases to 10,000 on the business plan. This is one of the highest in the industry. For comparison, Ahrefs only includes 500 monthly reports even if you’re on their $999/month enterprise plan. Cons Traffic analytics data isn’t always accurate. The traffic data you get with Semrush is a rough estimate only. While it’s more accurate than most other tools we’ve tested, it’s best to avoid relying on this data for critical decisions. Although we could say this about any other tool. Data only covers Google. One of Semrush’s biggest drawbacks is that it only gives you data for Google. If you want data from other search engines like Bing or YouTube, you may be better off using another platform. The UI is a little cluttered. I wouldn’t say Semrush is difficult to use, it’s just that there’s so much data and so many features crammed in that it can be hard to know where to start. For beginners, it might be overkill. How much does Semrush cost? At first glance, Semrush can seem a little expensive. It’s an industry-leading toolkit that offers access to the most extensive databases and the very best features—and the price reflects that. However, while Semrush isn’t cheap, it is great value for money. Prices are in a similar ballpark to competitors like Ahrefs and Moz but come with much more generous usage limits. And unlike Ahrefs, you won’t be automatically billed if you accidentally exceed your plan limits. And there’s a free trial available. And far higher usage limits. Here’s a breakdown of the different plans you can sign up for: Free The Free plan gives you limited access to Semrush and won’t cost you a penny. You’ll still be able to use most of the core tools, but you won’t have access to all the usual data you’d get in the reports. And there are a lot of restrictive usage limits. Free users can only pull up 10 Analytics reports per day (whereas paid users get thousands of searches). Plus, you can only create a single project and track up to 10 keyword positions. Pro The Pro plan is Semrush’s entry-level paid plan. It starts from $139.95/month and is designed for independent marketers, beginners, and small teams. It comes with everything in the Free plan plus extra features and higher usage limits. Pro users can have up to 5 projects and track up to 500 keywords with daily updates. They’re also limited to 10k domain and keyword analytics results per report, 3k reports per day, and 100k page crawl credits per month. If you sign up for the Pro plan, you’ll get access to keyword, domain, and backlink analytics but you won’t have access to the content marketing toolkit. You’ll also miss out on some advanced features like historical data and Google Data Studio integration. Guru The Guru plan is the next step up and is our go-to recommendation for most users. It starts from $249.95/month and comes with sufficient usage limits for pretty much any type of user (including SMEs, agencies, and marketing consultants). Guru users can have up to 15 projects and track up to 1500 keywords with daily updates. They’re limited to 30k domain and keyword analytics results per report, 5k reports per day, and 300k page crawl credits per month. Upgrading to Guru also unlocks access to all the tools in the content marketing platform such as the Semrush SEO writing assistant, along with 800 SEO content templates, and more. On this plan, you also benefit from Google Data Studio integration and access to historical data. Business The Business plan is Semrush’s highest-priced plan tier. It’s designed for large enterprises and businesses and costs $499.95/month. It comes with the highest usage limits (5000 tracked keywords, 50k domain and keyword results per report, 10k reports per day, 1 million page crawl credits, etc.) and unlocks even more advanced features. In addition to everything included in the Guru plan, Business plan users also get access to the Share of Voice metric, API access, Product Listing Ads, and more. Add-ons In addition to the regular plans, Semrush also offers a bunch of ‘add-ons’ that expand its functionality. These add-ons are charged separately and include: Listing Management. This unlocks local SEO tools including local rankings, GBP and Facebook listing management, directory submission, etc. The basic version costs $20/month and the premium version costs $40/month. Semrush Trends. This unlocks the Traffic Analytics and Market Explorer tools and costs $200/month per user. Agency Growth Kit. This unlocks agency workflows including the Agency Partners platform, Bid Finder, CRM, My Reports, and the Client Portal. It costs $150/month ImpactHero. This is an AI tool that helps you optimize your copy and content. It costs $200/month. It’s also worth mentioning that you can also contact Semrush to discuss a custom plan for your specific needs. Annual discounts are available. Try Semrush Free Semrush FAQ Before we wrap up, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about Semrush. Can I use Semrush for free? Semrush offers a free account that gives you limited access to some of its tools (with restrictive usage limits). There’s also a 7-day free trial available if you want to try out premium features with higher limits. Does Semrush offer refunds? At the time of writing, Semrush offers a 7-day money-back guarantee on all its plans. You’ll need to request the refund via the contact form within 7 days of signing up. Make sure you check the terms and conditions first before you sign up. Is Semrush a Russian company? Given the ongoing events in Ukraine, many marketers are concerned about using Russian tools. However, Semrush is actually a US-based company with entities all over the world. They’ve also publicly expressed their opposition to war and their concern about the events in Ukraine in a recent Tweet. And, their Polish based entity, Prowly, is coordinating relief efforts with NGO’s. More information can be found in this LinkedIn post from their CMO. What are some alternatives to Semrush? We’d recommend using SE Ranking if you want a more affordable alternative to Semrush. It covers many of the same core features with more flexible pricing plans. SE Ranking is often thought of as a rank tracking tool. However, it’s a complete SEO tool with huge databases of backlinks and keywords, and it’s rather affordable. Especially considering the low entry-level pricing plans and their pricing for unlimited projects. You can also try Serpstat, Mangools, and SEO PowerSuite. Final thoughts That concludes our in-depth Semrush review. Semrush deserves its stellar reputation and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone with the budget to afford it. It’s undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive and advanced online marketing platforms available right now, with an extensive suite of SEO, PPC, and content marketing tools. Combined, these tools offer all the functionality marketers need: keyword research, backlink analysis, auditing, on-page optimization, and beyond. We particularly liked Semrush’s link-building toolkit and competitive research tools. We also appreciated the Keyword Intent metric as it’s essential for modern SEO and content marketing but is something few other platforms currently provide. The interface itself is well laid-out, though the enormous amount of metrics and features may make it feel a bit overwhelming for beginners. Priced similarly to its main rivals on the surface (Ahrefs & Moz), Semrush also offers superior value for money on account of its more generous usage limits. For example, even on $999/month plans, Ahrefs only offers 500 monthly reports. Semrush offers 3,000/day on its lowest plan, scaling to 10,000/day on their business plan. I have been using Semrush for a couple of years now, I primarily use it for keyword research, site audit, and rank tracking. Here’s a snap of my active subscription to the Semrush Guru plan! In this post, I’m going to share my verdict on using Semrush over the years. You will find a review of all toolkits, pricing, alternatives, drawbacks, pros & cons, and so on. Semrush Review 2024: A Quick Verdict Semrush is an all-in-one SEO solution that has toolsets to acknowledge both on and off-page SEO aspects. With direct competition from Ahrefs and MOZ, Semrush stands out loud and proves itself worthy in many tests. I will take you through some of them as I review the platform further with real-world examples. A quick verdict: Semrush is a great tool to have if you are serious about your SEO practices. The pricing is economical, and the features are evenly distributed across all plans. That means if you purchase even the most basic plan, the value that you get is justified. Semrush helps you do keyword research, competitor analysis, site auditing, rank tracking, link building, and much more. Its balanced performance is the reason the platform has the trust of more than 10 million users and continues to grow. Semrush Pros & Cons Let me summarize the complete article for you in this section! Semrush Pros: Easy to use interface. Robus SEO toolkit provided. Semrush provides reports in both standard and infographic form, which is really great. Justified pricing structure. Semrush has responsive customer support. 14-day free trial for users to test the tool. 7-day money-back guarantee. Semrush Cons: Beginners might find it overwhelming. Learning curve alert! Semrush does not have an extension. What’s New With Semrush? In the last 1.5 years, Semrush has rolled out 33 major updates. Let us take a look at them here! Semrush now lets users in 28 countries boost their local SEO. They have added a new feature to listing management only for premium locations called Review Analytics. Semrush has two new ChatGPT features in Listing Management Toolkit. Semrush has updated keyword databases for the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, and Brazil to reflect the new search volumes. Semrush now tracks a staggering 38 unique SERP features and identifies more powerful opportunities to boost your brand’s visibility. What is Semrush Used For? Semrush packs around 50 tools in its toolkit, making it a complete solution for online marketing. You can use Semrush to run keyword research, competitor spying, website auditing, PPC campaigns, email marketing campaigns, AI writing, and more! Let’s Review The Semrush Toolkit The Semrush SEO toolkit has four main modules that consist of various SEO tools. Let me take you through all of the modules and important tools in this section. Before we go ahead with a detailed review of the SEO toolkit, check my Semrush free trial video here. Competitive Research Semrush has a total of 5 tools in this module that help you with a complete domain analysis of your competition. Here is the list of tools that you will find under this module: – Domain Overview – Traffic Analytics – Organic Research – Keyword Gap – Backlink Gap Let us see each of these tools in action below! Tip: If you are wondering how accurate Semrush is, then check here for detailed information on its accuracy. Domain Overview With the domain overview module, you will get insights into the strengths and weaknesses of your competitor’s website. All you have to do is put your competitors’s URLs in the search bar, and Semrush will give you a report on the website’s organic search traffic, paid search traffic (if any), and the number of backlinks in the very first fold. Semrush will also show you the distribution of the traffic in different countries, along with the number of keywords the domain is ranking for in each of those countries. We put our site in the search box for this example. So, how accurate is this data? Let us cross-verify it with Google Search Console. The in-house data shows the traffic to be 312k, while Semrush shows 226k. That’s a difference of 86k! Although 86k is a big difference, it’s worth noting that Semrush doesn’t have access to your competitor’s Search Console data. It predicts the traffic with data from third-party sources. Traffic Analytics The traffic analytics tool lets you check the traffic metrics of a domain you enter. It also checks the traffic of a domain against the three competitors you enter. I have entered “Forbes” and “Exploding Topics” for this example. You can refer to the screenshot to check it. Semrush shows the number of unique visitors, page visits, average duration of visits, and bounce rate in the first fold. Let us compare this data with Google Analytics now! Refer to the screenshot below to see the same metrics but from an in-house data source: Here is a table showing the metrics from Semrush and Google Analytics for a URL: Parameter Semrush Result Google Analytics Result Visits 708k 755K New/Unique Users 573.1k 747k Bounce Rate 89.75% 92.69% You can see that Semrush gives pretty close enough data in the visits and bounce rate section, it only takes a hit in the new users section. Organic Search The Organic Search tool helps users understand competitors’ organic traffic. The tool helps you get an extensive list of organic keyword suggestions; it further provides insights into: The current ranking positions and traffic percentage Keyword difficulty score Keyword volume The average CPC (cost-per-click) The SERP features such as — featured snippets, image carousels, reviews, a knowledge panel, etc. Refer to the screenshot below to get an idea of the tool. As you can see in this screenshot, Semrush also gives tags to the keywords — for example, you can see an “I” in blue color in front of a keyword in the above screenshot, which means that the keyword is “informative” in nature. “N” is for navigational, “C” is for commercial, and “T” is for transactional. Semrush Keywords Gap Semrush’s keyword gap module helps you compare organic and paid keywords with up to five domains, subdomains, or even specific URLs. This feature comes in handy when comparing your website rankings and keywords with those of your competitors. You can see in the screenshot below that we had put Under Armour as the root domain and added Adidas, Reebok, and other domains to compare. Semrush gave two things in the upper fold: first, it gave the top keywords and their volume, and second, it gave a responsive infographic with colorful circles. Each circle was assigned to one URL, and they were in different sizes; the size of the circle was dependent on the number of keywords each site had. The bigger the circle, the larger the number of keywords. They also overlapped each other, showing the number of common keywords. Full marks for the presentation, Semrush! Enough about Keywords; let’s get into some backlinks now! Backlinks Gap The backlinks gap tool helps you compare your website’s backlinks against your competitors. These metrics help you uncover all those websites linking to your competitor but not to your website. What’s more, a “Weak” section will also display the domains that main point to your website less frequently than your competitors. Other than that, you also get to see unique and common backlinks between you and your competitor. While Semrush has a separate set of tools, especially for backlink building (which we are going to look at later in the post), these sections provide ample insights into a competitor’s backlink profile. Review of the Semrush Keyword Research Module & Its Accuracy Semrush claims to have 25 Billion keywords in its database currently. That is among the top SEO tools in the market. Semrush has a total of six tools in its keyword research toolkit; we’ll talk about a couple of them in this section. I use this tool quite often for doing keyword research for the DemandSage blog. I’m gonna share my experience using the tool. Keyword Overview Tool The keyword magic tool of Semrush is a good place to start keyword research. The research team at Demandsage is a huge fan of this insightful, heavy tool. All you have to do is enter a keyword in the search box, and Semrush will show you the following things: Search volume of that keyword – both country-wise and global. KD (Keyword Difficulty) Score The CPC and paid promotion score. The keyword interest graph List of variations questions along with the related keyword. Refer to the screenshot below to get a better idea of what I’m saying Keyword research is the backbone of any SEO strategy. It always starts with identifying potential keywords to target once you have decided on the niche. Semrush has a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and understand, even for beginners; if we compa re it with Ahrefs, it has a more complex interface that may take some time to get used to. Now, you might be wondering how accurate the metrics by Semrush are. Take a look at this study, which thoroughly tests this matter. Let me sum up the findings for you real quick. It was found that Semrush had the highest percentage of keyword search volumes, which was closest to the Google Search Console value. Then, it also ran a series of head-to-head comparisons to evaluate how its search volume compared to each platform one-on-one. In all cases, Semrush won these head-to-heads by a large margin. Keyword Magic Tool The keyword magic tool is another tool in Semrush’s keyword analytical arsenal. You might be wondering why you need two tools for the same purpose. Wait, they are quite different. The Keyword Magic Tool is a better option for experienced people. On the other hand, the keyword overview tool is a good place to start if you are a beginner. Here is what you get when you search for a keyword in the keyword magic tool: Phrase Match: It uses the base keyword or phrase in some different orders. Broad Match: It uses any variation of the phrase or base keyword you enter. Questions: A list of keyword questions related to base keywords. Related: This will be a list of general keywords related to the base keyword or the phrase you have entered. You also get the ability to filter the results based on numerous factors such as keyword volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, and more. Try Semrush Semrush Link Building Toolkit In this section, we will review Semrush’s backlinking building tools. Is it any good? Let’s have a look. Backlinks Analytics When you enter a specific URL or a domain in the backlink analytics tool, you will see the following metrics. Referring domains — number of domains linking to the URL. Backlinks count — Number of links the URL has received. Link Type — You can also see if the link is a do follow or a no follow. Authority Score — The domain authority a domain has Backlinks anchor text — text for which domain is getting linked to Backlink Type — Whether the backlink is for a text or an image or a video Refer to the screenshot below, where we have put our own URL to give you an example: I put some filters in place to see the newest backlinks. You can see that Semrush shows a backlink that the URL received just yesterday (at the time of writing this post). If you scroll down further, you will see additional backlink data in the form of infographics. This data representation is both easy to understand and fun to deal with. Who said backlink audits are boring? 😀 Backlinks Audit Tool The Backlinks audit tool helps you get detailed insights into the toxicity score of a site’s backlink profile. The toxicity score is nothing but the number of suspicious domains linked to a website. The Semrush backlink audit tool not only gives metrics but also insights into how you can improve those metrics. Ahrefs does a slightly better job when it comes to backlink analytics. You can read that in our detailed comparison of Semrush vs. Ahrefs (whose link you’ll find in the post above!). I personally would give Semrush an 8/10 for its backlink analytical abilities. Semrush On-Page & Technical SEO Review Semrush’s on-page and tech SEO toolkit is a valuable tool for any website owner or SEO professional. It can help you to identify and fix any technical SEO issues and improve your website’s on-page SEO. Let’s review them quickly! Shall we? Technical SEO Semrush crawls your website and generates a detailed report that includes metrics on crawlability and indexability, meta tags, internal and external linking errors, structured data, JavaScript and CSS errors, and mobile-friendliness. Semrush Site Audit also provides you with a Site Health score, which is an overall indicator of the SEO health of your website. This score is based on the number and seriousness of issues found. Check your website’s broken pages Internal links distribution of your website Core web vitals and the page speed check Check all the pages with the markups — Twitter Cards, Schema.org Check our guide on how to use Semrush’s SEO Audit Tool. Run a Site Audit One of the things that sets Semrush Site Audit apart from other website audit tools is its ease of use. The interface is really easy to understand; mind it, technical SEO can be quite tricky to deal with, but Semrush’s way of displaying the reports is easy to understand. On-Page SEO Checke r Semrush’s On-Page SEO Checker helps you improve the on-page SEO of your website. It analyzes your website and provides you with a detailed report that includes metrics such as keyword usage, meta tags, title tags, headings, images, internal linking, and content readability. After Semrush is done analyzing these metrics, it suggests strategy ideas, UI ideas, SERP feature ideas, backlink ideas, and more. You have to check these ideas and tick them off your on-page SEO checklist. I personally feel that this tool blows things out of proportion. Sorry, Semrush, I have to turn my back on you for this one 🙁 We at Demandsage prefer to go with Surfer SEO and Page Optimizer Pro. Semrush Advertising Toolkit Review Semrush Advertising Toolkit is a comprehensive suite of tools that can help you plan, launch, and manage your online advertising campaigns. Here are some of the key features of Semrush Advertising Toolkit: Keyword research: It helps you find relevant keywords for your online advertising campaigns. Competitive analysis: this feature helps you spy on your competitor’s online advertising campaigns. Ad creation: this feature helps you write ad copy for your campaigns. Campaign management: The campaign management tool in Semrush Advertising Toolkit help you manage your online advertising campaigns across multiple platforms. Semrush Market Analysis The Market Analysis module offers tools like Domain Overview and Advertising Research to gain insights into competitors and advertising strategies. Domain Overview reveals competitor website performance, including keywords, traffic, and more. Advertising Research provides an inside look at competitors’ ad strategies, helping you identify strengths and weaknesses. Semrush Social Media Review Social media users want their favorite brands to be more active on social media than ever. Semrush recognizes this and provides a social media toolkit to help you with the task. The social media toolkit enables you to create, analyze, and spread content across social media platforms. You can schedule your posts, get insights, and track your competitors. Now, I haven’t personally tested the tool, but I came across many reviews on the web that said that Semrush is a great SEO tool, but it falls short when it comes to managing social media. There are many great tools for managing social media, like Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Buffer. You can refer to the screenshot below to see one of the features of the tool in action. Here, we are creating a content planner! As of now, Semrush only supports these social media channels — Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google My Business. Semrush Content Marketing Review Every now and then, we have heard that content is King! Yes, content is still the king, but here’s the catch. We have to intend to solve users’ problems in a precise and structured way. This is where the Semrush content marketing toolkit comes into play. As per our experience, the Semrush Content Marketing toolkit is effective — but it’s not something that I praise. They have a structured platform, which helps you get started. For example, with the content marketing toolkit, you can start with topic research, create a proper plan, write the article, optimize it properly, check & analyze the mentions, and then mention the impacts. Everything is fine but not that great, but one thing I liked about Semrush content is Topic Research. To get started, you need to enter a seed keyword. It will show up topics, headlines, and questions. What’s more, with questions, you will get a whole content map, which is typically the copy of SEO tools like AnswerThePublic. Even the best part is you can find topic ideas for specific geolocations such as — the US, UK, etc. Some Other Notable Features Of Semrush Yes, Semrush also comes with other notable features that I haven’t reviewed in this review of Semrush. So, we’re just listing some other notable features of Semrush here. Semrush Academy: It is a collection of short courses from industry experts that you can take to get certified — SEO, Content Marketing, Paid Ads, etc. Check Semrush Academy review here. Brand Mentions: The brand mention features monitor your brand name mentions on — web forums and social media handles like Instagram, Twitter, etc. Post Tracking: Post tracking helps you track backlinks, social shares, and keyword rankings for specific articles. Semrush Sensor: The Semrush sensor helps you check the SERP volatility along with the updates to algorithm changes. Semrush Agency Solution: If you’re an agency looking to expand it further, Sermush has a solution for that, too. Who Should Use Semrush? Semrush is made for both agencies and individuals. Its wide range of features makes it useful for website owners, content marketers, SEO specialists, and even social media marketers. While it has tools for all these professions, SEO and content marketing tools are the best. Taking this question monetarily – people who can afford the tool should really go for it as it is a good value for money. I wouldn’t go for a product that has world-quality insights, but it cut my pocket heavily. Semrush has done a pretty good job of curating its pricing plans. But you can only get 10K domain and keyword analytics results per report, 3k reports per day, and 100k page crawl credits per month. You’ll get access to the keyword, domain, and backlink analytics tool when you purchase the Pro plan, but you won’t be able to access the content marketing tool. It’s mainly designed for large enterprises and businesses that cost $416.66/mo if billed annually. Semrush Add Ons Explained Apart from offering three pricing options, Semrush also offers add-ons, which you can get for additional prices; take a look at what semrush add-ons are and how much they cost below: Semrush Local: This add-on can help businesses improve their local visibility on search engines and get their business listed using listing management. Two plans are available for this add-on: the basic plan costs $20/mo, and the premium plan costs $40/mo. Semrush Trends: This add-on gives you access to tools like Traffic Analytics and Market Explorer that can help you figure out the strategies your competitors are using. The pricing of this add-on is $200/mo/user. Agency Growth Kit: This add-on helps agencies automate their workflows and boost revenue growth. They will get access to additional tools like Agency Partners for setting up a new leads channel, Bid Finder for finding contracts, CRM for managing the client data, My Reports, and Client Portal for $150/mo. ImpactHero: It is an AI tool that helps your customer review your content during their buying journey. The pricing of this add-on is $200/mo. Semrush’s Bigge st Drawback (Things I Didn’t Like) Semrush is loaded with features, BUT Semrush does not have an extension 🙁 An extension would allow users to access Semrush data and tools directly from their WordPress dashboard. This would be a convenient way to manage SEO and marketing campaigns without having to switch between different platforms. Semrush’s closest competitor, Ahrefs, has a great extension that I personally use. What’s more, the interface of Semrush is nested. For beginners it’s difficult to understand the data. When Semrush is compared to Ahrefs — Ahrefs beats in the interface game. If Semrush can combine all the modules in one single toolkit it would be easy for users. For example, the keyword Overview Tool and Keyword Magic Tool can be combined to work in a single interface. Other than these two drawbacks, I didn’t find any more drawbacks. Semrush Alternatives & Competitors for 2024 Here are a few alternatives to Semrush that you can consider. My Verdict: Is Semrush Worth It? I have been using Semrush as an SEO and Content Marketer on a daily basis for DemandSage. Based on my experience, I would say Semrush is worth the bucks you’re paying. The reason is that it offers an all-in-one toolkit for all your marketing needs, especially the SEO toolkit. It has drawbacks, as mentioned above in this review. However, it still beats another complete suite of marketing tools.
